Thomas Plummer, living the dream

I first heard the name “Thomas Plummer” several years ago.  Sometime, around 2009, I started reading his blog posts and buying his books.  I couldn’t get enough of him.  Up until then, I didn’t even know there was somebody out there running around helping gym owners.  “That’s what I want to do!”, I kept saying to myself.

Taking a break

It is Master’s week.  For those of you who don’t know, the Masters is a professional golf tournament.  It ends on the second Sunday in April, and it is played at the same course every year.  Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.

Brutal honesty

It has been said that Minnesotans are really nice people.  It has also been stated that much of their perceived niceness is due to passive aggressiveness.  In other words, they don’t like confrontation.

Being a Minnesotan, I tend to agree with this assertion.  At the same time, I like to think it doesn’t apply to me.  I do not remember if I have always been this way, but somewhere along the line, I decided that it was more my style to tell it like it is.

Commitment versus interest

 

Manti Te’o was interested in having a girlfriend.  So much so, that he either invented one, or at least developed such a level of credulity that allowed for his believing she was real for four years.  He definitely was committed to dating someone he had never seen.  I mean, like unbelievably committed. 

Many overweight and out of shape people are interested in losing weight and becoming fit.  I would argue that if you asked 10000 fat and unfit people if they were “interested” in losing weight and being fit, that 10000 of them would say YES!. 

But are they all committed?

About 3 out of every 4 Americans has not been a member of a fitness center. Ever. That is 75%. That is a lot of people. As I've mentioned in previous posts, the percentage of Americans joining gyms has NOT increased in the past several years. Yet new fitness centers popped up left and right over the last few years.

If you own a fitness center, and you don't utilize a trial membership as your staple marketing offer, all you are doing is hoping for a member of another gym to get tired of that gym and come to your gym. In other words, you are hoping your competition gets sloppy, hires idiots, and doesn't upgrade or update. This will be the only way for you to get new members. Oh, sure, a few newbies to the area, AND the 10% of the population who has been a member and who currently isn't gets motivated again, will help. BUT, you need to focus your attention on the 75%.

They aren't all lazy.

Rejection day

On Sunday, I returned from Las Vegas.  I gave a short presentation at an NFBA workshop.  The impetus for the workshop was to celebrate Thom Plummer and 30 plus years in the fitness industry.  My presentation wasn’t very good.  I take the blame for misunderstanding what I should talk about.  I was under the impression that it didn’t have to be educational like the Mega Fit conferences.  I spent about an hour going through my time in the fitness industry pointing out the big lessons I learned and the leadership or lack thereof that I received.  It was very similar to my most recent blog post.  I mention this in case people from the workshop begin to follow me on facebook and/or check into www.jasonlinse.com now and again.  During my presentation I also bared more skin than I probably should have.  I mean, for sure I would not have discussed death, dying, and seeing a shrink if I were working for a company.  But since I am my own boss, I embraced the opportunity to share some recent challenges.  I talked about being fired.  I related the feelings of discovering my mom had a fatal disease.  I discussed the summer of 2011, and all of the funerals I went to and the important people in my life that were lost.

Decide what to be, and go be it.

Today is October 26th.  I turn 40 on April 26th.  This means that today I am exactly 39.5 years old.  Thank goodness we don’t round up when it comes to age, OR starting tomorrow, I would be forced to say I am forty!

First, I don’t feel 40.  I feel about 25 years old most days.  Some days, I feel 70 years old, but if you averaged it out, I bet my “feel” age comes to about 29.3.  I’ll take it.

If I still worked for dishonest, self-centered morons, I would feel like I was dying. I remember that feeling.  It helps keep me motivated.

Head in the sand

I have a friend who owns a gym.  I have written about him before.  He does absolutely nothing right when it comes to the fitness business.  Nothing. 

He dresses like a slob almost every day.

He spends ZERO dollars on marketing.

He is rude to almost everybody he encounters.

He staffs his club himself, AND only about 25 hours per week.

What else do I need to say?  He sucks at owning and operating a gym.

7 steps to fitness center profits

On Thursday, October 4th, 2012, I presented from 8:30am to 5:30pm in front of a bunch of fitness center owners.  I had 284 slides, 7 total steps and 3 BIG areas of focus.

Understand

Market

Maximize

That is the first word from each of the 7 steps.
