A true story about gym employee drama

I know a gym owner who has two independent contractor personal trainers.  One of them has been employed for about 2 years.  Another is pretty new but available full time.  The 2 year veteran is part time.  He has a 6am to 3pm “day” job so he trains in the evenings.

The 2 year trainer started banging a part time front desk person.  This front desk gal had been dating the sales manager for a couple of years.  Sales manager guy felt like he was cheated on.

3000 gyms!

Anytime Fitness just hit 3000 gyms worldwide.  That is freaking impressive.  They accomplished this in less than 15 years.  In fact, they probably only had about 250 open 10 years ago.  This means that in the past decade, Anytime Fitness headquarters has witnessed over 2500 new gyms open up for business.

I wrote two articles today for Club Solutions Magazine, and I filmed a short video for my youtube channel.

One of the articles was about why I like the paid trial offer for memberships.  In it, I write about how too many gyms mix marketing and sales together, and therefore try to do a price driven offer, like free enrolment all of the time.  And those offers only work for serious gym goers, and even then, can backfire, because those folks will simply wait for you to offer free enrollment again.

Instead, use a paid trial offer to get some of the intimidated segment of the sedentary population to take action. Free has no value.  Free week, free 14 days, those do not work.

Your business in 30 seconds or less

I just read an article about how to present a new idea.  The thing that struck me the most is the author’s claim that you must be able to clearly explain your idea in 30 seconds or less.

It makes total sense and seems like something I should have known.  The reason it is still stuck in my craw all these hours later is because I think I have done a horseshit job of being that brief, and even that clear about some of my ideas.

Fat folks are clueless

People are clueless.  I mean, honestly, many are really fucking clueless.  About many things. I am one of these people when it comes to certain topics.  I know nothing about hockey.  I know very little about the stock market, and even less about how to bake a cake.

But the thing is, I don’t care about those things.

Mr. Smith goes to Washington

My first job title for Snap Fitness headquarters was “Corporate Sales Manager”.  I was asked to train in new Snap Fitness franchisees onsite.  I would be there for 3 to 4 weeks.  One week before the gym opened, doing a pre-sale and pre-opening marketing, and then 2 to 3 weeks helping build up the membership and training owners and staff on sales and operations.  I loved it.  The pay sucked, I was always in a hotel, but the company was growing fast and furious which meant plenty of excitement and future opportunity.

Bryant-Lake Bowl

I smoke cigars.  Alert the media, have you heard about the Lindbergh baby?  I realize most people who know me or follow me on social media, are aware of my cigar habit.  And those who were not, are now.

I smoke probably 3 per week.  I have a humidor at home and a cigar shop three blocks away.  I sit on the front stoop of a friend’s house a couple of days per week and light one up while sipping (okay, gulping) scotch.  But let’s not get into my drinking habits on this article.  One vice is enough for today.

Why I hate Planet Fitness

Okay, most folks reading this likely know that I hate Planet Fitness.  I am not sure how many people know how deep my ire really is for this fucking ugly and cheap franchise model.  And I doubt anybody really knows why and where this anger started.

When I was supporting franchisees of a 24 hour key card model that charged around $35.00 per month for a single simple access membership, all of this Planet Fitness hatred was born.

How to get more referrals

“Tell me about your referral process?”

“Um, well we give a free month to members who refer people.”

“Okay, but that is not a referral process.  That is a referral program.”

“what’s the difference?”

“A process a system that leads to names and numbers.”
